FAQ

(but not really because no one asks me anything)

About the webmaster

I'm just a person. I love music. I also like making playlists and wanted to put them somewhere because I actually work very hard on them haha

I'm also absolutely horrific at describing music in detail so I don't know why I have a music website

What kind of music can I expect around here?

I love music that I would describe as 'very produced' - which means my favourite genres are things like electronic, dance, and K-pop. I love synths and samples and sound effects and shit like that. I actually don't tend to gravitate towards music with many real instruments… but you know, I'll give most music a chance as long as I'm in the right mood for it. :)

What's the deal with new mewsic?

It's literally just music I found in each 3-month period that I think is cool and wanted to share. I think having more human curation out there would only be a good thing, so I decided to contribute. I was also thinking that Wrapped and its cousins are fun, but subdividing the year into smaller chunks is more interesting for me to look back on personally. Rather than 'these are my most listened to tracks' (because… I probably know that…), I think about which songs I'd be most excited to show to other people and I try to put them in some sort of sequence that makes sense to me. Sometimes one artist dominates. Sometimes not. It's very my taste, so if someone finds even one thing they like from it then that's cool.

What's the deal with your fandom playlists?

Oh god I just get obsessed with something and then I have to make a playlist out of it I'm sorry! I make a ton of these but most don't end up public haha, if it's not your vibe then just ignore them lol. I'm an ex-8tracks user and I can't really get the playlisting habit out of my system!

HOWEVER, I have put little descriptions for non-fans on each one, which tell you the genres and vibes you can expect. (Although I'm not good at identifying genres so they might be a bit vague!) SO maybe you can still use them for music discovery if you want? I only use songs I like at least a little bit in them :P

On the other hand, if you are a fellow fan and you want all the details, I've added key lyrics and/or other notes about why I chose each song if you click the little button next to any track. I always wished that a website could be made where I could share playlists AND actually have detailed notes attached, but it's never happened so I did it myself. Now I am free.

How do you discover new music?

Okay, genuinely: DJ mixes, Bandcamp, NTS radio, curated playlists (at the moment I use Apple Music primarily), Shazaming stuff in cafes and record stores, AMVs and other such edits, those pov playlists you get on YouTube (YES REALLY), and just keeping vaguely up to date with artists I like and who they're collaborating with. Every so often I'll do a discography deep dive on an artist I'm curious about. Oh, and algorithms are a factor too, but I've been trying to reduce how much I rely on them. I think it's going fairly well!

What songs do your random page titles come from?

Do you 'stan' anyone?

My one and only longstanding music fandom is SHINee World (since 2012). But I'm not sure I would even call it stanning because I've never been very actively involved in K-pop fandom and I dip in and out a lot. Most of the time, I'm happy just listening to their music and keeping up with new releases. That said, the band and the fandom have been present in the background of my life for so long that they're always going to be sentimental to me.

There are surely many other artists that I love right now as you're reading this, but my musical interests do tend to shift every few years so the best way to get an idea of my current faves is probably to look at who I've featured frequently in new mewsic over the past year or so!

Anything else to say?

If you are someone who loves metadata and managing a music library (this is NOT everyone) and you use Apple Music or local files on an iPhone, then please look into Marvis Pro, it is the best music frontend in the whole world and I love it. If you have used Smart Rules before it's like that but on your phone and more powerful actually. And almost everything is customisable in terms of layout. There's definitely a learning curve so I'd recommend lurking the Reddit or BikeCycleMan's tutorial videos to get a sense for the kinds of things that you can do. Maybe one day I'll do a proper write-up or something but… trust me bro.
